Traditional radio, standard brick and mortar distribution and being signed by a major record label are no longer the only means of getting your music the attention. Thanks to digital distribution and the mass appeal and easy access to the Internet, unknown musical talent now has a real chance of success. In addition, the indie musician is not stuck with the cost of doing an entire CD. You can make one and post it on the Internet, obtaining great success of a song. With a little know-how and marketing sensibility any musician newcomer or an experienced musical act can now achieve success, a great success, Indeed, on their own. Recently, while a guest on Sirius Satellite Radio Show the good life, I spoke with the host, who told me that her two teenage children get most of their music from the Internet and listen to regular radio anymore. Why ? Because they can get the music of acts that are not allowed to listen to traditional radio. They are tired of the same age bands and singers being played over and over again. "Most have no talent, only masterpieces." This is not the first nor the last time I heard that statement from teenagers and adults alike. For the indie artist who wants to reach a wider market (and should have a good product) and receive more exposure for your products online, the first thing you have to do is market, guerrilla market and then market some more. How is that? There are many ways I mention in my book, The Indie Guide to Music, Marketing and money, but here are some simple suggestions: • Join music boards and start the discussion. At the end of each of your messages, make sure you put who you are and your website. Add something to the conversation, no spam. Writing tips and post them on the boards, etc. If the cards do not allow the labels, but it lets you send your email address, make sure it is something with your website at the end. Have a real email address, but not to the primary email and to be released. Something like mine: email@example.com • Start networking at meetings of local musicians and composer / artists forums in your area. You can find them online. These artists hold meetings like you who meet regularly to discuss the music scene and present their latest creations. It is also a wonderful place to get the pulse at the concerts you can participate in the marketing ideas in the new. • You know all that annoying spam you receive snail-paid envelopes inside? Why not save the envelopes and put a little note inside that states since they were kind enough to share their information with you, you are returning the favor. In addition, any bill or any correspondence you send is official, includes a worksheet or a small card that has an advertisement about you and your music (see the weight, you do not want to add more postage). Be sure to put your website in any material you have. • Start your own podcast and publish it everywhere podcast. • Why not send your music to different podcasts. Ask permission first. Send to your site where you can hear a sample or two and if they are receptive to the reproduction of their music on their podcast, send it along. If they use your music in your podcast you may have won new fans and sold more albums. The most important thing you can do is play live. Go to Wal-Mart, Starbucks and other local shops and ask if you can put in a free concert there. Anywhere, any place that lets you play, do! Make sure you have a registration form where people can subscribe to your newsletter. Then create and send a newsletter once a month at most. This is a form of "Buzz Marketing", also known as "viral marketing". At the end of the letter, be sure to include your website, of course. Tell your fan base that can pass at will. This is a list very, very small things you can do. The time for the indie musician is now. Enjoy it! Many blessings on your path.
